What is an ATS?
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software used by employers to collect, filter, and rank job applications before a human recruiter reviews them.
How ATS systems work:
The system scans your resume for keywords matching the job description
Resumes with higher keyword alignment are ranked higher
Resumes with formatting issues (tables, columns, graphics) may fail to parse correctly
Many qualified candidates are filtered out before a recruiter ever sees their resume
What this means for your application:
Keyword alignment matters as much as content quality
Resume formatting directly affects whether your content is readable by the system
A resume optimized for humans may score poorly in an ATS
HireFlowAI's resume generator and ATS Alignment Report are both built around these requirements.
How to read your ATS report
Your ATS Alignment Report includes five sections:
1. Match Score
An estimated keyword alignment score from 0–100. Above 75 is strong. Below 60 indicates significant gaps to address.
2. Matched Keywords
All keywords from the job description that appear in your resume. These are working in your favor.
3. Missing Keywords
Keywords from the JD that are absent from your resume. High-priority missing keywords are flagged — these are typically required qualifications.
4. Section Analysis
A pass/needs work assessment for each resume section — summary, skills, experience, and education.
5. Optimization Recommendations
3–5 specific actions you can take to improve your score. Each recommendation references a specific section and the missing term to address.
How to improve your ATS score
Review your Missing Keywords list in the ATS report
Identify which missing keywords genuinely apply to your experience
Click Edit on your resume and add those keywords naturally into relevant sections
Do not force keywords that do not reflect your actual experience
Re-run the ATS report after edits to see your updated score
Where to add keywords:
Core Skills section — most direct placement
Professional Summary — high-value placement for top keywords
Work Experience bullets — most natural placement in context
What to avoid:
Keyword stuffing (repeating terms excessively)
Adding skills or tools you do not actually have
Placing keywords in headers, footers, or text boxes (ATS systems often cannot read these)
